🎉 TL;DR: Most Minecraft code errors are caused by typos, expired codes, region mismatches, or using the wrong redemption page. Check our specific fixes below for your exact error message. If your code is genuinely broken, get a fresh one from our weekly Discord giveaway.

Error: "This Code Has Already Been Redeemed"

This is the most common error and it means someone has already used this code. Each Minecraft redeem code can only be activated once on a single Microsoft account.

Why it happens:

  • You already redeemed this code on a different Microsoft account and forgot.
  • The code was shared publicly and someone else grabbed it first.
  • You received a used code from an unreliable source.

How to fix it:

  1. Check your other accounts — If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, sign in to each one and check your game library. You may have already redeemed it without realizing.
  2. Check your order history — Go to account.microsoft.com/billing/orders and look for the Minecraft redemption.
  3. Contact the source — If you got the code from a giveaway or retailer, contact them for a replacement. FreeMCFA always replaces codes that don't work.

Error: "Check the Instructions That Came With Your Code"

This generic error usually means the code format is incorrect or there's a typo.

How to fix it:

  1. Double-check every character — Look closely for easily confused characters: 0 (zero) vs O (letter O), 1 (one) vs I (letter I) vs l (lowercase L), 8 vs B, 5 vs S.
  2. Remove extra spaces — Copy-paste can sometimes add hidden spaces before or after the code. Delete and retype the first and last characters.
  3. Include the dashes — Microsoft codes use the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Make sure all five groups and four dashes are present.
  4. Use the right redemption page — Go to redeem.microsoft.com directly. Don't use third-party sites or the Microsoft Store app's code entry, which can be buggy.

Error: "This Code Is Not Available in Your Region"

Some Minecraft codes are region-locked, meaning they can only be redeemed by accounts registered in specific countries.

How to fix it:

  1. Check your account region — Go to account.microsoft.com and verify your country/region setting matches where the code was purchased.
  2. Change your region temporarily — In your Microsoft account settings, you can change your region to match the code. After successful redemption, you can change it back. Note: Microsoft limits region changes to once every 3 months.
  3. Contact Microsoft Support — If changing regions doesn't work, Microsoft Support can sometimes manually apply region-locked codes to your account.
⚠️ Important: Do not use a VPN to try to bypass region restrictions during redemption. Microsoft may flag your account for suspicious activity. Use the official region change method in your account settings instead.

Error: "This Code Has Expired"

While most Minecraft product codes don't expire, promotional codes and trial codes often have expiration dates.

How to fix it:

  • Check the expiration date — Look at the original email, card, or message that contained your code. Promotional codes usually list an expiry date.
  • Contact the issuer — If the code expired recently, the retailer or promotion may issue a replacement.
  • For FreeMCFA codes — All our giveaway codes are brand new and unused. If a code has expired, DM a moderator in Discord for an immediate replacement.

Error: "Something Went Wrong, Try Again Later"

This is a server-side error from Microsoft, not a problem with your code.

How to fix it:

  1. Wait and retry — Give it 15–30 minutes. Microsoft's redemption servers occasionally experience high traffic.
  2. Clear browser cache — Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then navigate to redeem.microsoft.com again.
  3. Try a different browser — Switch from Chrome to Edge (or vice versa). Some browser extensions can interfere with Microsoft's redemption page.
  4. Try incognito/private mode — Open a private browsing window to rule out extension conflicts.
  5. Check Microsoft service status — Visit the Xbox Status page (support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status) to see if there are known outages affecting code redemption.

Problem: "Code Redeemed But Minecraft Not in Library"

You successfully redeemed the code but Minecraft doesn't show up in your game library. This happens more often than you'd think.

How to fix it:

  1. Check the right account — Make sure you're signed into the Minecraft Launcher with the same Microsoft account you used to redeem the code.
  2. Restart the Minecraft Launcher — Close and reopen the launcher. Sign out and back in to refresh your library.
  3. Wait for propagation — Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours for a redeemed code to appear in your library. This is rare but does happen.
  4. Check both editions — Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition is bundled. Make sure you're looking for the right version in the launcher (Java tab vs Bedrock tab).
  5. Verify at microsoft.com — Go to account.microsoft.com/services and check if Minecraft appears in your subscriptions/services list.

Problem: "Wrong Platform" — Code vs Account Type Mismatch

Minecraft codes come in different types depending on the platform. Using the wrong type of code for your platform will cause issues.

  • Java & Bedrock Bundle codes — These work on Windows PCs and unlock both versions. Redeemed at redeem.microsoft.com.
  • Xbox/Console codes — Redeemed through the Microsoft Store or Xbox console. Not interchangeable with PC codes.
  • PlayStation codes — Redeemed only on the PlayStation Store. Completely separate from Microsoft codes.
  • Nintendo Switch codes — Redeemed on the Nintendo eShop. Also separate from Microsoft codes.

Make sure the code type matches your platform. A PC code won't work on PlayStation, and vice versa. If you received the wrong type from a giveaway, contact the organizer for a swap.

Problem: Account-Related Issues

Sometimes the problem isn't the code but your Microsoft account itself.

  1. Account suspended — If your Microsoft account has been flagged or suspended, you won't be able to redeem codes. Contact Microsoft Support to resolve account issues.
  2. Child account restrictions — If you're using a child account under Microsoft Family Safety, a parent may need to approve the redemption. Ask your parent/guardian to check the Family Safety settings.
  3. Unmigrated Mojang account — If you have an old Mojang account that was never migrated to Microsoft, you'll need to complete the migration at minecraft.net before redeeming new codes.
  4. Two-factor authentication — If you recently enabled 2FA, sign out of all sessions, sign back in with 2FA, and try the redemption again.

When to Contact Mojang/Microsoft Support

If none of the above fixes work, it's time to reach out to official support:

  • Minecraft Support — Visit help.minecraft.net and submit a request. Include your code (or the last 5 characters), your Microsoft account email, and a description of the error.
  • Microsoft Support — Go to support.microsoft.com and start a chat or request a callback. They can look up code status on their end.
  • Xbox Support — For console-related redemption issues, use support.xbox.com.

Response times are typically 24–72 hours. Have your code, account email, screenshots of the error, and purchase receipt (if applicable) ready.
